Romans 12:12 - Joyful in Hope, Patient in Affliction, Faithful in Prayer

"Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer" (Romans 12:12) Paul's directive to be joyful, patient and faithful in the midst of daily struggles seems like a hard pill to swallow. However, this charge comes directly on the heels of instruction to serve the Lord continually out of spiritual fervor and passion for Him. When we are walking after the Spirit and living out of our relationship to Him then these things will naturally occur in our lives because each one of these is a fruit of the spirit. These fruits are His characteristics and traits, so these characteristics in our lives are a byproduct of our relationship to Christ. As we become more and more like him we start resembling His character on a daily basis. We are to be joyful in hope. When our hope is placed Jesus then being joyful in all things is easy because we know the hope to which we were called. I Peter says "In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesu...

Romans 12:11 - Never Lack Zeal but Keep Serving the Lord

"Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord" (Romans 12:11) A key to serving the Lord all the days of your life is spiritual fervor. The King James Bible refers to it as "fervent in spirit" and the Amplified Bible records it as "being aglow and burning with the Spirit". This flow of living by the Spirit of God is what will keep you seeking and serving Him continually. We have the Holy Spirit as our guide in life and God has promised us that he will never leave us (John 14:16-18). This is why he gave us the Holy Spirit as our counselor, to help us navigate this life by showing us all things, revealing the truth of God's word to us. As born again believers, we all have the Holy Spirit living inside, however we can choose the degree to which we flow in Him. Without a close fellowship with the Lord, being guided by His Spirit, it is easy to get distracted along the way and wrapped up in what the world has to offer. But if we live by the Spirit we will not ha...

Romans 12:10 - Be Devoted to One Another

"Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves" (Romans 12:10) These words of Paul are so simple yet so profound. As Christians we are to love one another and be devoted to each other as members of the same family. We should consider each other over our own interests and give precedence and honor to our brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus. There should be no quarreling or factions between us, and we should consider how to build and encourage each other continually in the Lord. This image of God's family is what we are to portray to the world; united, loving, caring and devoted to one another. Paul wrote to the church at Thessalonica, "We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to us" (I Thessalonians 2:8). The Gospel is what brought them together and gave them a common bond. What grew from that foundation was a great friendship with Christ as the center...

Romans 12:9 - Love Must Be Sincere

"Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good" (Romans 12:9) One of the differences between Christians and the world is our ability to love. This love comes solely from God and stems out of the fact that he first loved us. I John says, "Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God" (I John 4:7). Our capacity to love is much more than a natural response to a feeling, our capacity is supernatural because we are children of God and God lives in us (I John 4:7-21). In today's passage Paul tells us that love must be sincere. It must be genuine - the real thing. It must be without hypocrisy. In our natural selves this is hard to do. It is not always easy to show love and compassion to one another, but this is the mark of a born again believer. Our love for one another should speak louder than any words we can express. It is no mystery that love is the very first fruit of the Spirit listed in Galatians ...
